Earthing Conductor Sizing

Jump to section

Overview

The Earthing Conductor Sizing calculator determines the minimum cross-sectional area of protective earthing conductors using two methods from AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules):

  • Adiabatic equation — A = I√t / k — calculates the minimum conductor area to withstand the thermal energy of a fault without exceeding insulation limits
  • Table 5.1 lookup — minimum earthing conductor size based on the active conductor size (prescriptive requirement)

The governing minimum is the larger of the two, ensuring compliance with both the calculated thermal requirement and the prescriptive standard.

Formulas

Adiabatic Equation (AS/NZS 3008.1)

Minimum conductor cross-sectional area:

A = I × √t / k

Where:

  • A = minimum conductor area (mm²)
  • I = fault current (A)
  • t = fault clearing time (s)
  • k = material constant depending on conductor material, insulation type, and initial/final temperature limits

Thermal Withstand Time

Rearranging the adiabatic equation to find maximum fault duration:

tmax = (A × k / I)²

The selected conductor PASSES if tmax ≥ clearing time.

Example 1 — 10 kA, 0.4 s, copper/PVC with a 50 mm² active

The common case: the adiabatic minimum (55 mm²) governs and rounds up to 70 mm².

Given: Prospective earth fault current I = 10 kA cleared in t = 0.4 s; copper earthing conductor, pvc-insulated (k from the material/insulation table); associated active conductor 50 mm².

Material constant kk = 115 A·√s/mm² — copper/pvc (IEC 60364-5-54 Annex A cable-core value, 30/70 °C basis)
Adiabatic minimum (IEC 60364-5-54 543.1.2)S = I × √t / k = 10,000 × √0.4 / 115 = 6,324.6 / 115 = 55.00 mm²
Minimum for the active conductor50 mm² active → 16 mm² minimum earthing conductor (component's copy of AS/NZS 3000 Table 5.1, pending verification against the licensed standard)
Governing minimum and selectionmax(55.00, 16) = 55.00 mm² (adiabatic governs) → next standard size 70 mm²
Thermal withstandtmax = (S × k / I)² = (70 × 115 / 10,000)² = 0.6480 s; clearing time 0.4 s must not exceed it → 0.400 vs limit 0.648 s PASS

Example 2 — 2 kA, 0.1 s, 240 mm² active: minimum size governs

A small, quickly cleared fault needs only 5.5 mm² adiabatically, so the minimum for the 240 mm² active conductor sets the size.

Given: Prospective earth fault current I = 2 kA cleared in t = 0.1 s; copper earthing conductor, pvc-insulated (k from the material/insulation table); associated active conductor 240 mm².

Material constant kk = 115 A·√s/mm² — copper/pvc (IEC 60364-5-54 Annex A cable-core value, 30/70 °C basis)
Adiabatic minimum (IEC 60364-5-54 543.1.2)S = I × √t / k = 2,000 × √0.1 / 115 = 632.5 / 115 = 5.50 mm²
Minimum for the active conductor240 mm² active → 95 mm² minimum earthing conductor (component's copy of AS/NZS 3000 Table 5.1, pending verification against the licensed standard)

Example 3 — 20 kA, 0.5 s, copper/XLPE with a 120 mm² active

Minimum for the active conductor120 mm² active → 35 mm² minimum earthing conductor (component's copy of AS/NZS 3000 Table 5.1, pending verification against the licensed standard)

Tips & Limitations

  • The adiabatic equation assumes all fault energy is absorbed by the conductor with no heat dissipation — valid for fault durations up to ~5 seconds.
  • For bare conductors exposed to touch, ensure adequate mechanical protection regardless of calculated minimum size.
  • Steel conductors have significantly lower k-factors due to higher resistivity — resulting in much larger required cross-sections.
  • The override k-factor option allows non-standard materials or temperature limits to be used when the standard lookup doesn't apply.
  • Table 5.1 minimum sizes are prescriptive and must be met even when the adiabatic calculation gives a smaller result.
  • Results can be exported to Excel for documentation and reporting.
