Overview
Calculates electrical parameters for three-phase AC motors (AC3 duty): motor full-load current, apparent power, reactive power, and phase angle. Essential for motor circuit design, cable sizing, and switchgear selection.
AC3 duty covers the normal starting, running, and stopping cycle of squirrel-cage induction motors — the most common motor duty classification for industrial applications.

Formulas
Motor Full-Load Current (kW input)
where \(P\) = active power (kW), \(V\) = phase-to-phase voltage (V), \(\cos\phi\) = power factor, \(\eta\) = efficiency (decimal).
Motor Full-Load Current (watt input)
where \(P\) = active power (W).
Motor Full-Load Current (HP input)
where the HP-to-kW conversion factor is \(\text{HP\_TO\_KW} = 0.745699872\).
Apparent Power
For watt mode, the result is in VA (the \(\div 1000\) factor is omitted).
Reactive Power
where \(P_{\text{elec}} = P_{\text{shaft}} / \eta\) is the real electrical power drawn from the supply (shaft power divided by efficiency).
Phase Angle
- Reactive power was originally \(\sqrt{S^2 - (P + P)}\), then corrected to \(\sqrt{S^2 - P^2}\), and finally corrected to use \(P_{\text{elec}} = P_{\text{shaft}} / \eta\) instead of \(P_{\text{shaft}}\). The power triangle relates S, Q, and the real electrical input power, not the mechanical shaft power.
- Phase angle used \(\cos(\text{PF})\) instead of \(\arccos(\text{PF})\) — corrected to use the inverse cosine function.
- HP apparent power incorrectly divided by the HP→kW conversion factor — corrected to use the same \(S = \sqrt{3} \times V \times I / 1000\) formula as kW mode. Apparent power is always in kVA regardless of input power unit.

| Reactive power | Q = √(S² − Pin²) = √(16.667² − 16.667²) = 0.000 kVAr; engine reports 0 kVAr (rounded down to 3 s.f.) |
| Phase angle | φ = acos(1) = 0.00°; engine reports 0° (rounded down to 3 s.f.) |
| Result | full-load current 24 A, 16.6 kVA at 400 V |
| Reference | Hand calculation: P_in = 15/0.9 = 16.667 kW; I = 16666.7 / (√3 × 400 × 1) = 24.06 A; S = √3 × 400 × 24.06 / 1000 = 16.67 kVA; Q = √(S² − P_in²) = 0.00 kVAr (= P_in·tan φ = 0.00); φ = acos(1) = 0.00° (validation case c0004-15kw-unity-pf) |
Standards & References
This calculator implements three-phase motor analysis per IEC/AS/NZS standards. The AC3 duty classification is defined in IEC 60947-4-1 and covers the normal starting, running, and stopping of squirrel-cage induction motors.
For cable sizing or protection coordination based on the calculated full-load current, refer to the applicable national wiring standard (e.g., AS/NZS 3008, IEC 60364, NEC).

components/c0004_power_motor/component.py—PowerMotorCalculatorclass, parameter schema, component registrationcomponents/c0004_power_motor/calculations.py— pure calculation functions for motor current, apparent power, reactive power, and phase angle
The motor current logic in this calculator is shared with c0005 (Cable Voltage Drop), which reuses the same current calculation as a first step in its voltage drop analysis.
Code Paths Developer
Key Functions in calculations.py
-
calculate_motor_current(power, voltage, powerfactor, efficiency, powertype)— returns current in Amps. Handles kW, watt, and HP power types with appropriate unit conversion. -
calculate_apparent_power(voltage, current, powertype)— returns \(S\) in kVA (or VA for watt mode). -
calculate_reactive_power(apparent_power, active_power)— returns \(Q\) using the power triangle relationship. -
calculate_phase_angle(powerfactor)— returns \(\theta\) in degrees via \(\arccos(\text{PF})\).
Testing Developer
Run the component tests with:
pytest calcs/test_c0004_power_motor.py -v
Tests cover all three power type modes (kW, watt, HP), boundary conditions, power triangle identities, and verify the corrected formulas for reactive power, apparent power, and phase angle.
